Saw the thread about bubinga, which was great reading... So I ask the question "What's your favourite wood ??"" I have a 4 string thru neck of Lacewood which I love. The grain is kinda reptilian and scaly !! Sounds great as well.... Any favourites then... either for sound or looks !!
Hmmm...for tone I like alder and maple, for different reasons. Maple is nice and bright, alder has a more classic J tone. Top woods are completely different. Anything spalted maple, myrtle burl is my current favorite, I also love thuya burl, mappa burl and black poplar burl (Jerzy uses it on their really top-end Obsession Mastery VII). Wenge is beautiful too, if you get the right piece. Walnut does nothing for me, but sounds terrific. Love purpleheart. Holly is a really cool wood, almost totally white, no grain showing. Redwood burl can be fantastic looking, but it's really soft. Ipe is harder than any wood I've known, but is hard to work. Looks very, um, tan. Plain. Lacewood is cool- looks great, sounds a lot like mahogany.
Ash, for me! Hey Mark Beem! 4 months smoke free? Congrats! next month it will be 4 years for me....and I never really thought I could do it! Life is so much easier, cheaper and better without them!! Hang in there!
Walnut. If only they could make a type of walnut that had the tone, hardness, and look with the weight of balsa.
What's my favorite wood? morning! Seriously, I don't think I could pick a single favorite type of wood. I like variety.
In terms of tone I don't know much about different woods. In terms of looks, I have never seen a walnut bass i didn't love. It's a great lookin' wood. Travis
for body wood.. I'd have to say swamp ash or walnut.. my favorite top wood is figured koa!! heres the slap for my custom GW 6
Koa and Walnut are high on my list, I also love Purpleheart (It's wood - and it's purple!!) and highly figured maple (quilt, flame, whatever)
