I don't think there is a single best answer. They are all good for what they do.

My favorite as of now are 2 j's. Love em!!!!! Second is the dual HB in the G&L L-series & ASAT bass.

Latest fav is two Js, but I don't mind Ps, humbuckers, piezos or any pup that does the job.
  5. Agreed! A personal fave -- the inevitable marriage of two classic pickup designs

Two J's, MECs, on the Thumb are great for that bass.

The P/J Barts on the Pedulla are great for getting a totally different sound.
  7. what about J/P/J on the stu hamm urge II:D
i wonder how a MM and a P would sound.

I've been enjoying soapbars lately, but I think my favorite is the P/J. That is a great combination to my ear.

The shape doesn't matter for the sound. You can make a soapbar that is a P inside for example.

For looks I like soapbars best.
I can do with any 2 pickup bass, but the nicest thing I've seen is the 3 pickup design a la Le Fay.

  10. I kinda like how a P/P sounds, really in your face sound.

    Definately not subtle though.

I'd have to go with the dual soapbar humbuckers
  11. Never played a P/P. I can imagine matching a SPB-2 and a Quarter Pound on one bass. STEP OFF.

I love all kinds of pickups. But I have to say my all time fav is two soapbars with coil tap. That way I get fatness and that Jazz bass tone.
  12. two humbuckers with series/parallel/coil tap
giving quite a range of combinations
from P to J to MM
if the spacing is correct and the correct coil is tapped..
a variation is both in series
wired series parallel or tapped using micro switches.
is this what G&L have and Wal?
