I'm a definite gear horder, but occassionly I need to make room for more, eh? So, I am considering selling these two basses:

    Tobias (post-Gibson, Burbank) Basic 5, # 1353

This bass has bubinga body wings (according to Mike, one of his favorite combinations on the Basic 5), and is pictured on the left in this photo:

There are some more photos and discussion in this thread: Tobias Trio. There is nothing wrong with this bass at all, but I am more attached to the other two Tobiases, and I'm thinking that maybe on Basic 5 and one Classic 5 is "enough." I could be wrong, though. :p This Basic 5 comes with the original case.

Tobias Growler 4-string (modified by Carey Nordstrand)

This bass was used by Carey as a test mule for a while, and he shaved the neck, leveled and dressed the frets, and I think put a new nut on it, as well as installed a custom quad coil pickup. I recently picked this bass up in a trade from TBer "Vic." I do like the way it plays and sounds, and I wanted a bass in this configuration, but after picking a 4-string Skjold Stage series (which has a similar pickup placement), I don't have as much need for the Growler. This bass does not come with a case.

Here are some pics of the Growler:

I'd like to get $2,000, plus shipping (to the lower 48), for the Basic 5, and $800, plus shipping (to the lower 48) for the Growler. Trades would be considered, though cash is preferred. I'm not in a huge rush to get rid of either of these basses, and I like them both. But, in an effort to try and streamline my "collection", it does make some sense for me to consider moving these on to someone else. Again, to be clear, these are just feelers, too. I reserve the right to pull either one, if I become too attached to them, or if I can find more room to store bass gear! :D

    Later, Tom.

For those who asked, the Growler weighs in at 8 lbs on my scale, and has a wenge fingerboard.

Couple quick notes on the Growler...

First, the pickup in the pictures is NOT the pickup currently in the bass (you might not have noticed the bartolini in the picture). The custom Nordstrand pickup actually has exposed pole pieces, and sounds a zillion times better than the stock pickup. Seriously... I've checked one out.

Also, this thing plays and sounds AMAZINGLY well. NO dead spots, perfect neck, dual truss rods (tho I never had to touch them), and a super comfy bass to hold and play. The ONLY reason Tom got this bass is because he had a cab I was seriously GAS'n to check out, and because I've always really wanted the 5 string version of this same exact bass, which I still currently look for. Further, when I find one, I'll DEFINITELY be calling Carey up for a pickup.

I absolutely guarantee this is the baddest Growler 4 out there. Period.

    Sorry, but probably not.

Thanks for the offer, though. That is a beautiful bass!

While trades are still a possibility, I'm starting to feel like if I don't get the cash that I am looking for, I'll keep these fine basses. Still, feel free to hit me with an idea, but I have to say, I'm quite fond of both of these basses and not looking to trade for the sake of trading, if that makes sense.

    All PMs answered.

That growler is killer, perfect set-up and one of the best feeling necks you will ever see.

Thanks for rubbing it in cheezy one! :crying:......................:p

Pardon my ignorance Tom, but is that Growler a Gibson era Tobias?

I can step in here, 'cause it was mine... yes, it is. I'm not sure, but I think maybe all the Growlers are? However, at least on this one, don't let that slow you down. It's been seriously blessed by Carey Nordstrand.

Vic already pointed it out (thanks, Vic!), but to the best of my knowledge, all Growlers are pre-Gibson.

It is a seriously nice playing bass, and just phenomenal for slap. But, even I get to the point where I have to sell something! :D
