Fender American Vintage II 1966 Jazz Bass

After letting the Geddy go, I don’t know if I should even think about these, but 1966 was a fabulous year for Jazz Basses. A few of my favorite players I like played them. I wish this had blocks instead of dots, but I bet it is still cool.

  2. Doc, it's a 60's jazz bass with lollypop tuners and a bound neck that doesn't sound anywhere near as good as the Geddy.

Drive a stake through that GAS vampire's heart, NOW. :D

The USA Geddy runs circles around these vintage II’s. Don’t bother with it!

I think Sixties Jazzes have their own thing and I like it too. Daryl Jones and Victor Bailey played ‘66’s, and they sounded awfully good to me. Meshell Ndegecello and John Paul Jones sound pretty good too.

I’m just looking. Barring a miracle, I will not have a spare $2K for a new Jazz this year.:(

  5. Yes, I agree, they did sound awfully good, but again, a lot of that is to do with the player, and all those quoted are very good players, especially Victor IMO. Absolute master of the slippery jazz bass/bridge pickup/fusion tone. I offer this clip of him playing a 'lowly' Fernandes jazz with Steps Ahead to make my point.

And I know you're only looking. Just a friendly dig in the ribs from a fellow GAS sufferer. Group therapy if you will. :)

I like my 66. I bought it in Chicago in 1981 for $300.

Nah, just get another DJ5. It has the low B plus . And it cost a lot less. More for the money. ;)

The DJ series are based on Darryl Jones ‘66 Jazz.:) I do get your point though.:bassist:

Victor Bailey’s bass playing is like a breath of fresh air! His tone is indeed glorious on that Fernandes! He was acknowledged to be a great one and underrated at the same time.

You could get a Japanese Sadowsky for that money.

I think the price on Japanese Sadowsky’s are going up since they are no longer being made.

I think you should get the sunburst. Geddy sounded better with the Rick anyway. I had a '66 neck on a P bass for about twenty years.

Doc, have you checked out the Modern Vintage jazz basses? They have 60's and 70's jazz basses now.

If you like it buy it. Comparing sound is like comparing toilet paper.

The 66 J's seem to have a sound all their own. I am not sure the RI appeals to me. If I found an original in an uncommon color for sale, I would lay down the cash if I had it to spare.
