So I am thinking about getting a Japanese non-export Aerodyne bass and have a few questions...

...how difficult is it to find a replacement pickguard for these? I am partial to white pearloid.

...how difficult is it to find a case that will fit it?

...how difficult is it to find a Hipshot detuner that will work with it?

Any help from Aerodyne owners appreciated!

    Peace,
    -Tim

Pickguard? Didn't know Aerodynes had pickguards?! It should fit in a standard molded bass case and all gig bags!

Can only answer the case question.... an SKB 44 fits very well.

I noticed your picture link was from e-bay. Do not buy from the guy who acts as the middle-man and save yourself at least $100.

There was a recent thread which is still very active on Japanese Fenders. Following this link http://www.guitarjapan.com/fenderjapan/spec_jazzbass/ajb-58.html
will display the Japanese Aerodyne they offer.

I ordered one several months ago from Ishibashi for about the same price. The shipping is steep at about $100 but the final price was about $560. The guy on e-bay will charge in the high 600's so save your money for a good case.

No problems dealing with Ishibashi and everyone seems to like GuitarJapan also (their English website is the best I have seen yet for a Japanese retailer) so buy with confidence.

Be aware that the Japanese warranty is worthless in the States.
Also be aware that the AJB is a great instrument for the money, you will not regret buying one.

Thanks, actually the one I am looking to buy is not from Ebay, I just used that as a way to show what they look like w/ a pickguard.

But thanks for the GuitarJapan info...
nearly impossible trying to decipher the Ishibashi website.

I bought a dolphin gray CIJ non-export Aerodyne yesterday with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder P&J pickups for $500. Now I just need an inexpensive hardshell case...

I keep mine in a Squier J-Bazz case that has a moulded plastic external shell. The lightweight of the shell and bass make carrying it a breeze!

You're lucky it came with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders. The stock pickups on my Aero were incredibly noisy so I replaced them with SD 1/4 pounders.

Nice score! I keep looking at those as a replacement for my JP-90 which I love. If you are looking for a replacement pickguard, check out pickguards.us (a division of chandler guitars) they made me one for my JP-90 to my specs, they can create anything if you send them a tracing of the original (or better yet if you can SEND them the original). Just a thought! The site appears to be down right now, but they've got an incredible selection of materials. They're kinda pricey and VERY slow, but outstanding quality. Every hole in the pickguard matched up PERFECTLY and the PG was shielded!

    Just my thoughts...

Cool. Yeah I've been to pickguards.com before. Seemed a little expensive but if I feel like replacing the black stock pickguard with a white pearly one, I'll check them out.

I've always wondered about the JP-90. I've been wanting a Fender with a J-P config for a while I just can't stand the way the JP-90s look even though I have heard good things about their sound. But they're so reasonably priced used that I've been tempted to snatch one up. Well, the Aerodyne should be what I'm looking for.

Amen to that, the one thing that I really DON'T like about the JP-90 is the look. I improved it a little with the new guard, but alas, its still got the wierd kidney bean shaped guard. I'm VERY tempted to craft my own template and have a true custom one built.

Yeah the lame-looking guard is the only thing out of the ordinary about JP90s. Yours is actually one of the better looking ones I've seen. BassNw.com has this funky orange colored one with a black guard..which may be a cool color combo with a normal bass but on the JP90 it just looks horrendously bad.
