I'm "this close" to pulling the trigger on a FMT.. but I want to get some opinions on it from the good folks on this forum..

Any ideas as to whether this is a good way to blow $1650 (street price)?

I'm liking the rosewood fretboard w/ cherry burst finish..

It's a different finish, but here is a link to a pic. http://www.sweetwater.com/store/closeup/JBassADRFMTS--Main

Also, any thoughts on where best to buy and get a good deal? or are they all more or less the same deal.. $1650?

Try Bass Central. I have heard good things about them. More or less the same deal. That is a really sweet looking bass. I'd be afraid to take it out.

Great bass, but a word of caution if bling is your thing - from my research on these bad boys, the grade of the FMT tops can vary greatly from bass to bass...ranging from "wowza!" to "???" I'd be careful about ordering one sight unseen unless you know they have a good return policy.

I think American Jazz Deluxes are one of the best basses out there, at any price. They just do it for me. That said, an FMT is just that but prettier.

I would also search eBay, as these are often available.

These are beautiful instruments. I am developing GAS for one pretty badly.

Well I just totally scoured the entire internet and other sources, including Bass Central and there are NO FMT/Rosewood versions out there AT ALL! Crazy, so I'll probably have to order one.. unless I can talk myself into a red or amber finish... and that amber isn't so bad, but so maybe.. Damn I hate when I want to spend money, but can't!

    Well, spoke too soon!
Sweetwater called me up, and after literally spending all morning looking for the damn thing, including calling Fender twice, calling Guitar Center and Sam Ash corporate offices, and other desperate measures.. they told me they located one in their ware house still in the box..

I'm having it over nighted and will post pics as soon as I can..

pyrohr, thanks for the porn man! Now you've got me double guessing my color choice! Great photo's and looks like that action is dead on perfect.. :eyebrow:

lefty007: I tried them too... all that's out there is the maple neck, or the amber body on rosewood.. no sunburst/rosewood, at least not now! :D

I've also ordered a new bridge (Hipshot) to replace the Fender.. I never liked the fender one.. my RB IV came with a Hipshot and now I'm hooked.

I have an FMT V with rosewood (and the stock bridge). It's the best bass I have EVER owned. Just awesome - even singers notice how good it is.

Well Pac... do you need another one?

I ask because I just got the invoice email for my 4-string bass, and it's showing that I purchased a 5! :crying:

I called over to sweetwater to talk to my sales guy, who I told over, and over to verify that I was getting the 4,FMT,Sunburst,Rosewood... I even gave him the Fender model number to verify it! So he's out for the day now, and I have a 5 string being over nighted to me! :help:

I've never played a 5, and don't really feel I have the need for the low B.. Does anyone know if it's possible to re-string this bass to a standard EADG and then maybe add a high C or something? Also, is the string spacing on this bass a lot closer? or is the neck width larger?

I am torn now as to whether to try to get used to the 5, since it's a good 2 months before any 4-string versions appear on the shelves! :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:

Do you think I can get them to offer me a steep discount on keeping it? Man this sux!

I'm with Pacman on this. You may find yourself loving this thing. The B string isn't just for the low notes, it's even more useful for playing five frets up the neck, where the frets are closer together. I've said before, my FMT V (what would now be called a QMT, but all of them were "Figured Maple Tops" when they first came out), gets more gig time than any other of my basses (see profile). It's a great bass and, if the top looks really decent, you may fall deeply in love.
  13. I love my cherry burst FMT IV with rosewood board. It just dominates. I think you'll like the 5'er just fine if that's what it is. Give bass a chance.

Ok, I"m trying to turn this negative into a positive.. keeping an open mind and all.. But I have some (a few) questions to whom ever wishes to advise..

Keeping in mind (even though my equipment wouldn't lead you to believe this) that I am more or less a novice (At least I think I am).

So can anyone give me some 5-string tips? For example is there a webpage with some 5-string technique, scales, etc.. Also, as I asked before, can I install a regular 4-string set on it EADG, and then add another G string tuned to a C or something?

Finally will this 5-string have the same sound as the 4? is there a difference in the sound of this "Pao Ferro" neck? Is that just rose wood?

Also is the string spacing on this 5-string similar to a 4? or will I have to train myself for a smaller spacing?
  15. I say go for the V. You'll never regret it. I had Amer dlx Jazz V for a long time, loved the action, the tone, it was a great bass. Wanted a Music Man, had to trade the Fender for it, wife won't let me get new stuff without sacrificing old stuff anymore. Unless its an emergency. A blown amp? Emergency. A 5th bass? (3rd 5 string?) No.

  16. I don't know about the 5, but I've got a 4 string American Deluxe Jazz and it's an absolutely amazing bass. I can't tell you how happy I am with it, it's amazing. Definately my go to bass for the forseeable future.

In terms of your predicament, since it was their fault they should pay for you to ship it back to them and give you a full refund (as long as you don't scratch the thing) and an apology for wasting your time. However, if you could get them to agree to a discount it might be worth keeping it and ebaying the thing, they're quite popular. The discount probably wouldn't be more than the cost of return shipping, but stranger things have happened!

    Good luck whatever you decide!

Thanks Bubba.. I'm thinking if they're going to make this right for me, they'll have to pony up a good bit more than return shipping.. I'm thinking they'll need to give me an additional 20% off, thus eliminating their profit, and eating their mistake.. after all when you order steak medium rare at the restaurant, and they get you well done, they usually replace the steak and comp the meal... not asking for a freebie, but they certainly don't deserve to make a profit on this deal..

This then would allow me to try this V, and if it doesn't work out for me, which I would love for it to... I can then ebay it and take the funds and apply them towards a IV..

This is what I plan to do tomorrow when I talk to them.

The only surprise that can happen, and it would be like a dream is that my email invoice is incorrect, and it is indeed a IV.. we'll see.

I do a good bit of business w/ sweetwater since their warehouse is only about an hour from me. I've been up there several times this year too for audio classes, I even spent a day in studio (which is unbelievable). Actually, I even played a FMT up there a couple months ago. I'm sure you can get it worked out with them, just don't be too quick to bust their balls and demand they bend over backwards for you. I've dealt with their returns department and never had a problem exchanging or returning anything. What's the problem with just getting return shipping and getting the bass you want? I know they will be more than willing to do that for you, they've done it for me.

I wouls think you have a 30-day return policy. Try the 5-string (be careful not to damage it in any way). If you don't like it, return it - if you do, keep it!

Just take the time to adjust it.

Yes, you could restring it with a high C, instead of a low B.
