Hey Talk bassers, I want to trade a couple basses towards a good 5 string precision. The Bass Club by my house has a Fender American standard 5 there and they can order a Lakland P5. The fender is really nice, but I dont like the new system for adjusting trussrod with the little allen wrench ball on the long rod. I know one has 35 inch scale while the other is 34 inches. I have 3 Laklands and am very comfortable with them. I cant A B them because they only have the Fender, but I think the Fender is very nice.
Between the 55-64 and the Fender amer. Std. P5 which one do you Talkbassers think is better?

I say that you will get a ton of Fender guys saying Fender and a ton of Lakland guys saying Lakland. I say if you played the fender and like it than don't discount it because of the truss rod adjustment tool.

The neck on the Lakland 5 is the same neck they put on their other 5 string basses so if you own a Lakland 5 string bass that it what it will be like.

I'd honestly think the Lakland would be a better bass but the Fender holding its value better. That being said, I played a Fender P5 and pretty much fell in love. I'm reworking my Skyline 55-01 to try to get over the broken heart.

Definitely before you spend the money. Play both basses first.

    +1.

If you can't find a 55-64 in stock, contact Lakland and ask if you can come by and try one (if they have any in the shop). They're not too far from Bass Club.

Got to try both and chose the Lakland - liked the neck and longer scale better.

I don't own both BUT have played both...personally like the feel and sound of the Lakland better.....also (imho) better construction on the Lakland. I own a skyline (P only with vintage pickup) and US model (PJ with nordys)..again imho the B is much nicer and resonant on the Lakland.....

What kind of difference do you notice between the two lakland ps you have?

I have had my Precision V for almost 2 years now. It's the nicest new instrument I've ever bought regarding tone, vibe and the build quality is just fine. It's also remarkably light and the action is crazy-low for a Fender yet, it has no fret buzz and still delivers that punchy Precision tone.

I played many fivers before deciding on the Precision. Have played a few Laklands since and am still glad I bought the Fender.

I am floored by the www.alienaudio.us bass with Nordies ( a P and a double j). It is the most believable 5 string p I have ever played.
The Ladies are great and so is the Fender

Mostly the sound..the vintage sounds more vintage (think fralin) and the us is more modern due to the nordys.

The fit and finish is slightly better on the us but not much difference there.

Main difference is quarter sawn neck on the us vs flat sawn on the skyline...the skyline does have a graphite rod for stability though so it is no less stable

  15. those aliens do look nice. I had never heard of them. Any idea what they cost?

Fender will be thicker sounding in the mids and less refined feel. Lakland will be more clear and open. Scale difference is there. Both really good basses. Neither sounds exactly like a good 4 string P.

    I wanted a 34" scale bass.
The American Standard P5 is everything I wanted and more.
Only 5-string I completely feel at home with.
    It is just a P-Bass only 5-strings.
    As simple as it gets.

I beg to differ..... :) of course that is just my opinion...my vintage pickup sounds just like a good ole p.....the nordys are a little more modern sounding but that is what I wanted in that bass

That they do not sound like a 4 string p
