Up for sale is one of my favorite basses... no exaggeration one of the best P basses I've ever played regardless of price.

Fender Classic 70s P Bass - Made in Japan in 2011. From what I understand this was the first run of these basses and they only made them in Japan for 1 year before moving production to Mexico.

I've played more than one of these (MIJ versions), and they are excellent. There's something about these things. I'm not the only one to think so either, I've read about many others who have had the same experiences. Great fit/finish and awesome playability. Super low action, one of my favorite players for years. The neck is not thick like a normal P bass neck either--the nut width is typical P bass (1.625"), but the neck has a bit of a slimmer profile overall. Very comfortable and fast! And, well, blocks ...

This was also my only bass at one point when I had sold off all others, if that tells you anything about how much I like it.

Why am I selling then? Well, I ended up getting a second one of these in white. I was originally going to keep both, but I think I should probably only keep one... So, reluctantly, here's my original...

    Mods are below:
    -Hipshot Type A bridge
    -3 Hipshot HB2 Tuners + BT2 Drop-tuner
-Fender Original '62 Precision Bass pickup
-Orange Drop cap in the tone circuit
    -Switchcraft output jack
Original owner paid to have all electronics mods installed professionally.
The bass also has Dunlop? (I think) strap locks installed. I don't have the strap portion that locks in though, I just put the end of the strap over it as normal.

    8lb 15.4oz on my scale

Bass has a little bit of wear (tried to picture a couple of small spots) and general scratches/swirling on the pickguard. I think it is in really good shape overall though. This bass used to have a Badass II bridge on it before I replaced it with the Hipshot A, so there are a few small marks below the current bridge where the Badass made contact. I've attempted to picture them, but they are pretty minor. There's also a small spot of wear on the bridge finish you can see in the same photo.

Bass sounds GREAT. I love the playability and sound on this bass, I think you will too. This bass has really impressed me and has outclassed many basses at much higher price points. I can't think of a P bass I've played where this wouldn't stand up with it. I would've never let this one go had I not found another one... but since I did, this one needs a good new home.

Ships in a G&G Hardcase (pictured) with a decent amount of wear, but it's in fair shape and completely functional.

    $900 shipped CONUS
    (West coast add $25)

Please PM with any questions, I'll be glad to help however I can. Thanks for looking!

What is an “orange drop cap” ?
And how does it affect the sound compared to regular P bass?

    Hi,

I'm probably not the best person to explain this, but I'll give it a go.

The orange drop cap is simply an upgraded quality capacitor in the tone circuit. It's basically just a higher quality small electronics component which was upgraded when the precious owner had this bass worked on. These orange drop caps have been used over the years by some of the big builders out there (Fender, Gibson). Some claim caps affect tone, but it is hard for me to say for sure. If anything it likely affects the way the tone rolloff sounds/behaves, nothing major.

This bass is still a P Bass and sounds like a P Bass! No drastic departures with these upgrades, they're basically just upgraded traditional components. I think the bass sounds excellent though. Great P bass tone. Not sure how much of that is the cap vs. the pickup vs. the bridge etc., but I love the end result.

    Merry Christmas!

Nice looker! ... Does the bass have a 'Made in Japan' decal on it somewhere and the finish doesn't look poly? ... The picture reminds me of a Highway One body.

Yes, the bass was MIJ in 2011 and has "Made in Japan" on the back of the neck. I've attached a photo below
    20181227_111017.

The finish is poly, not like a Highway One. According to Fender specs:
    • Gloss urethane body and neck finish
    Hope that helps!

The neck alone is worth $900 folks!!! I’ve got one of these in white. It was my last attempt to bond with a split P style P bass. I prefer the single coil 51 or a P/J. The MIJ neck plays better than US Fenders did, at the time I bought it. I have been known to compare the playability to my US Laklands. I ended up building an active jazz around the neck, if that says anything ;-).

Thank you for posting your experience with the neck!

I totally agree, these necks and basses are something special. I have a USA Lakland + other great playing basses at higher price points and this P bass plays as well as any of them. I have yet to find a P Bass (USA or not) that plays better... certainly not for under $1,000.

Yes, for those of us that prefer the 1.625 nut width!
