seems to me that you could do some patch/spot repair and refinish without having to do the whole instrument, but that's just an opinion based on the fact that i personally wouldn't bother with it in the first place. it's not perfect = big whup! some paint and body folks will have some suggestions that go beyond my "forget it ...just play it" POV. good luck on your quest!
As long as the finish isn’t flaking off exposing bare wood, and the cracks aren’t spreading, I would just live with them. The poly clear coat is hard, and it doesn’t blend like nitro, so a spot repair will still be noticeable.
