I have a chance to buy a Fender DR - 5 String Bass in slightly used condition. It's a plum sunburst color and sounds and plays pretty well. I just cannot find much information on the 'net about this thing, other than Heartfield used to make these things in Japan. I can't tell what year it is, but from what i gather these were made in the early 90s before fender decided to call it quits with them.

so, two questions: 1) anyone know how to determine the year on these things? 2) what would be a reasonable price to pay for one?

I can vouch for these basses as they are great. The 5-ers are fantastic but the 6-ers are liquid gold. I own both and swear by them.

My advice is buy it. If you don't like it you can sell it to me!

I have a DR-4 and have talked with Fender about various questions I've had. They are very helpful. There is a method of determining age by the serial number. I don't remember what it is, but I have seen it on the web.

These sites are also informative and give some original specs for the guitar.
