    Anyone know of either:
    1. Active electronics upgrade for the DR-4
    2. How to change it into a passive bass and what pickups to install for that.

It's a nice bass, but the electronics are noisy.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks.

    Hey there.

I believe you can use just about any preamp to replace what is in your Heartfield. You just have to be sure to rewire the new pre through the active/passive bypass switch. Would not cost much for a repair guy to do that.

If you are going to replace your preamp, please send me a PM as I would love to buy it from you. I am building a bass and I actually love the tone in the Heartfield electronics. Thanks.

I once had impure thoughts. Oh, and I pluck my ear hair.
I had a DR-5 and I replaced the preamp with a S-D Basslines pre. Made all the difference in the world. Like you, I did not care for the stock pre at all.

If you want to make it passive, you can just pull out the pre and wite it for passiove. The pickups themselves are passive. One word of caution, though - the stock pickups are not very loud.
