I'm looking at fixing up my fender p bass and setting it up for a very low tuning, most likely drop G#. Will there be any effect on the neck? I will be using the correct gauge strings but am worried about other issues that might arise from tuning a fender this low.

I would start with BEAD stringing instead of EADG. You'll have to file the nut slots to accept the larger gauges.

Add a bit more relief to the neck than you normally would. Say, .012 instead of .010 just to throw some numbers out there.

One, because the strings will be flopping around a bit more than usual and two, because (at least here in North America) we're heading into the warmer months, when the neck will tend to back bow.

  3. Troy sanders from mastodon tunes with a low A with a fender.
