This is probably the subject of many previous threads, but I'm interested in a Jazz Bass (even after I had sworn off Fender many years ago) and would like to know if there's a size difference in the J-bass pickups for the MIM as opposed to the MIA, and also if aftermarket pickups and pickguards will fit both the MIM and the MIA. Thanks.

The body on the MIM is made of poplar, which gets a bad rap. Yes, it is cheaper than alder, but tonally it sounds pretty much the same.

The 2001 and newer MIM J's have different pickups at the neck and bridge, unlike the older MIM's, they are hum cancelling when combined at equal volume.

As far as the screw holes in the piickguard, I have no idea.
