Hello, Bassplayers, I am new here (from Germany) and I have a question... In 1982 I bought a Fender Jazz Bass. It is a golden one. Special edition. The serial # is CB 1XXXX. Ash-body, 1 piece maple neck with white binding. I played it all the time, so the condition is just like. In the 90th I build in an EMG active elektronik (Vol/Bal/Bass/High) What do you think this bass is worth today? Thx for your answers.........and please excuse my bad english (If it works I post some pics)
Even though that bass is incredible, you cant post a "What its worth" thread without being a Supporting Member.
Ooohh, sorry, I didn't know that this is a commercial forum... I didn't know that I have to pay first before I can ask a question So just forget my thread and my question...good by...
I dont understand why people react like this.. Honestly. Becoming a Supporting Member gives you certain rights, obviously knowing the worth of your bass isnt worth $20. Sorry you feel that way.
As I said, I am new here. In Germany I am a member in other forums. For bass guitars or acoustic guitars. And in other international forums about guitars too. I never became the first answer: be a supporting member first... But, O.K. if it works like this here, it is my first and last thread... I only wanted an opinion over my borderline, because Germany is not a very big area for rare or vintage instruments. And my English is not good enough for great discussions about basses. Thanks for your support.
It's a rule because this is a popular enough forum that if everyone and their brother was allowed to join just to ask what their bass was worth, we would never get to read the multitude of maple v rosewood, vintage v boutique, tube v transistor, or relicing suxors!1!! threads. It makes it easier on the mods to have these rules in place so they can close, delete, or ignore your thread as they see fit. To semi-answer your question, it's worth what you can get for it. With modifications you've brought down the value, but it's also a rare bass. Try looking into other rare basses from the same time period, might give you a better estimate as to what people are willing to pay. However, in your favor, basses from that era seem to be gaining in value, and you might be able to get a fairly decent price for it.
I just looked up your bass in the Fender bass book (page 75 for anyone else interested). It doesn't really state more than what you said, but it does say that the binding was discontinued in 1983 (so yours is definitely an 82) meaning it was still produce in fullerton. Check out pricing on the Fullerton reissues for a fair estimate on what you could get. The book says that the golden series were not in the official catalog, but the upgraded hardware (high mass bridge, gold finished bridge and tuners) and gold color were custom options that could be ordered. This would point to it not being a special series, but instead a custom order. But, the bass in the catalog is exactly as you describe your own, so maybe it was something they made a few of.
Just my 2¢... but I think some of you are being a bit hard on the guy. He's already apologized in his first response, and, being German, has stated that he has trouble expressing himself perfectly in English. How many of us can express ourselves perfectly in German, I wonder?
The bass as pictured with stock electronics is worth $2000+. Drop $300-$400 off that if you've done anything that can't be reverted back to stock. A Gold Jazz in mint condition would bring closer to $3000. My old bass recently sold on eBay for $1525 and it had a refinished paint job. Now, isn't that information worth becoming a Talkbass supporting member?
I don't think anyone has been hard on him at all. Where are you getting that? He even got the answer to his question from Yates and didn't have to spend $20.00 either -- although I'm not sure how it can be inappropriate for someone to ask for a bass to be valued if not a paid member, but ok for a paid member to go ahead a post an answer to the question...
I wasn't trying to be hard on anyone. Thats impolite...not my style. I was trying to point out that the people here are very helpful...no need to get angry. I've received a ton of help here. Anything from amp choices to practice tips. Good place for advise, lots of experienced people sharing knowledge.
I said "a bit" hard on him. I'm not saying that anyone bit his head off. I took German in high school, and I can only say that mamia29's English is a heckuva lot better than my German. I thought some of the responses he got in this thread were a bit on the brusque side.
How has anyone even been a bit hard on him? All anyone did was enplane the rules? And he got the answer to his question in spite of not following forum rules. I think he got it a bit easy, no?
OK, I've reread the responses a few times, and I honestly don't see a single comment that is anything but explanatory and matter of fact.
come on guys let it go, he got his answer albeit in a unregulated way, this thread has served its purpose now let it be done, things dont always go down in perfect accordance with the rules, theres nothing to debate, try not to give the wrong impression to this guy, show him what a comfortable and fun environment TB really is
What Jaco9 said. I've already stated my opinion, and feel no need or desire to restate it or debate it.
