    I own one of each...

    1. Different sounds (I like both equally - nice to have some variety, both are great for slap, fingerstyle and pick)
    2. Different body shapes (I find the StingRay more comfortable)
    3. Current build on a MM StingRay is more consistent than a Fender Jazz bass; ie, it won't take you as long to find a good one (if you have the extra money, go with a custom shop or reissue Fender).
    4. You really can't go wrong with either in the studio...I've always gotten along with engineers with both! Some even liked the StingRay better!
