I got a Fender MIM Jazz V a few years ago and have always just turned all the knobs on it wide open. I've only recently started tinkering with different tones by soloing pickups and the like. I got my Jazz V out the other day and tried to play with only the bridge pickup open. Everything sounded fine. I tried to add a little of the neck pickup to the sound and this sound that sounded kinda like a muted trumpet came from my amp. Not terribly loud, but noticeable.
I tried it in different settings and it happened with every one unless I had the neck and bridge knobs equal. Is this common? If not, does anyone know what the problem could be?

A little more info...I run straight to the amp (no effects) and it has happened on multiple amps.

Never happened to me. Same bass...I roll the volumes off a bit to set my amp volume so i can dig in with the volume knob or have a bit of travel in the pot to let me play really quietly but still pump out volume.

I get pickup hum but not crazy trumpet sound.

I'm gonna look for noiseless pickups sometime. Wish the quarter pounders came in split coil.
