I owned a 72 mustang. Black with maple board. String through.

I traded it straight up for my new white mustang PJ.

No comparison, the new one is much better. Proper full P sound with the added snarl of the J bridge if you want it. The bridge pickup actually produces a useful tone on its own.

Remember (and I found out by buying one) 'back in the day' they were cheap bases. The pickup farted out on the E on anything over 1/2 volume, and I am a light touch.

I am sure the new mustangs with the classic pickup style have improved, but for my money the new PJs are much better than the old ones.

I have a CIJ Mustang and two P/J Mustangs. There is a difference in tone, which I think is mainly due to the difference in pickups. The CIJ does need medium scale strings due to the string through configuration. And the P/J 's take short scale strings. However, I currently have "short scale" TI jazz flats (which are really medium scale; 32") on both the CIJ and one of the P/J's. On both of them, some of the fat part of the string is wound around the post on the E. More so on the P/J. It works with those strings, which are really pretty flexible, and the posts are big enough to accommodate. In general though, the main string length issue is: medium scale for the string through Mustangs and short scale for the P/J's.

my PJ mustang came with long scale strings. a couple fender reps say they do (or at least did several months ago) ship with long scale strings. go figure!

Wow! The PJs are even more versatile than I thought! Trying to decide what bass to sell to make room for that black, tort, and maple PJ... lol
