    Hello everybody,

    I'm new writing here. I've just bought at a (strange) very low price a P Bass sold as a 1979 original. I unmounted it and I have to say I've some doubts.
    The more strange things to me are the label on the fretboard and no readable s/n written on it. Then some details that seem too "clean" for a vintage instrument.

    I would let you check the pics, and if someone more experienced than me could say me more detailed info about its genuinity, I would be very thankful!

    Thanks a lot!

  3. I'm not an SME, but the neck looks legit. The SN off the decal tells me:
    Serial number: S891946
    Production year: 1977 or early 1978
    Made in Fullerton, USA

    CTS pot in the photo: 1979, 20th week.
    79= 1979
    20= week 20.
    .... but I'm not infallible.

    Nothing in the pics looks suspicious to me. The veneer fingerboard is difficult to fake and adds authenticity to it. I LOVE the grain pattern in the neck wood. I would bet the neck is very good. If you got it cheap put it back to gether and enjoy your 43 year old Fender Bass.

    FWIW the original pickguard came with a small sticker with the serial number replicated on the underside.

    The serial tag on the pickguard matches the one on the headstock, and everything elses matches up. Looks like the real thing to me. Congratulations!

  17. They made a lot of necks with serial numbers starting with S8 and used them over the next several years after 1978.
    If someone was able to make fakes that good, they would be making pre-CBS fakes, not late 70’s fakes. I wouldn’t worry about that bass being a fake at all.

    100% Fender. Agree with all previous comments, will add the body routing is period correct, too.

    OP, is it the shiny new looking tuners and bridge that made you suspicious? It doesn’t look like that bass was played much and it also may have had a bridge cover on it for years. Bridge and tuners are late 70s, so I wouldn’t worry.
  20. Congratulations!... you've got a late seventys Fender P!
    Now, get behind me...and help us fight off the "all 70s Fenders is junk" mob.
