This started out as a stock 1999 MIM P-Bass Special I got off eBay for about $280. I always wanted a black headstock added to it...3 necks later I got the right one that fit, felt and looked the best except for the small chip in it (may still have that touched up).
The neck seems like a more dense maple and has full size tuners which really added some weight to the bass. The sustain is amazing and I actually prefer the heavier feel.
Here are the additions I've made to date:
    - Seymour Duncan P/J Quarter Pound pup's
    - 1987-ish MIJ Fender Jazz Bass Special Neck
    - Gotoh 201 Bridge & Full Size Vintage Cloverleaf Tuners
    - Fender "F" Neck Plate & Black Pickguard
    - Schaller Strap Locks

Let me know what you think!

Sweet! I always find myself going back and forth about whether I prefer a black or a tort p/g on the sunburst Fenders. Can't go wrong with either. They both have a classic look. But yes, I think yours looks great.

    Thanks guys!

I originally replaced the gold anodized pickguard with a white pearloid one when I had the original neck on...definately had to go black when I put this neck on.

  6. jamzcl-
That is one serious bass. Congrats!

That is a sexy machine. I love the black headstock.

I used to have an SR5 with a black headstock and it just looked killer.

Wonderful bass. The black headstock adds major mojo.

    Thanks again guys!

The other two necks I tried prior to this one were:
1987 Power Jazz Bass Special -wrong scale & screwed up my intonation
MIJ non-export Aerodyne Jazz - the flat black didn't go with the glossy black on the body

wish I would have come across this neck 6 months ago and it would have saved me alot of time

Nice... P/Js sound so awesome, I'm sure those Quarter Pound pickups make it sound fantastic. I'd love to have a P/J if I was still playing 4s :)

  15. That just made me GAS for a P/J even more, Very nice bass!

I've become a P/J fan myself since I bought this...that's why my 5 string is a Fender Deluxe Zone which has the P/J's (active though)

my goal is to maybe get another Special but with a maple fretboard to round out my collection

  18. dude that's really beautiful. I'd love to play it...if anyone else sold it..haha.

good work! the chip on the headstock looks fine in my opinion, don't worry too much over it.

I like it a lot. I've got my own P/J project going right now. Less than 2 weeks untill I can wet sand the body. Can't wait, thanks for the GAS.

    :D

odds are I'll probably drag my feet on the chip and it probably won't get fixed anyway...gives it character too :D
