Fender Precison elite `83 - worth the price?

    Hi,

    my friend asked my to check out an axe for him.

    an `83 Fender Precision Elite something...

    I REALLY don`t know what to think about it.

    The fit&finish is as good as it gets - perfect fretwork, GREAT, GREAT, GREAT neck, good balcance etc. The tone also seemed really nice, but... There was something about this bass I didn`t like. The problem is I don`t know WHAT it was. The confusing preamp controls didn`t help - I was able to get a pretty wide array of different tones of it, but some of them were really not my cup of tea and I don`t really understand how the controls work.
    What`s the general opinion on those basses? Is 1,400 $ a good price for one (this is europe, remember - our prices a quite a bit higer than in us)?

    There's been some debate on those white pick ups. I am not sure they still were around in 83, so this may be a hybrid. In my opinion, it is way overpriced. Maybe worth $700

    They are nice basses.
    Sound different than a standard P-bass.
    Going price, between $700.00-$800.00.
