I just bought a "new" set on ebay. Anyone out there have them? I have seen pics with the ground strip and no ground strip on the brass mounting plates, these do not have the grounding strip. Mine also did not come with tubing. Measured 7.4k on teh neck and 8k on the bridge. That seems on the far end of the margin given they are spec'd at 7k a piece. I'm going to pop 'em in anyways but I get the feeling I got rooked.
From what I‘ve seen the original ’64 Jazz formvar p/u’s range from 7.0k to 7.7k (neck), and 7.5k to 8.1k (bridge). Also ’64 Jazz caps were either .05 or .02 ceramic. I have two sets of the ‘74 Jazz RI p/u’s. The advertised dcr’s don’t match what I purchased.
Thanks Ragul I appreciate the input. Looking forward to popping them in a project I have in the works.
My two ‘74 Jazz RI sets are: Neck 7.4k/Bridge 7.8k, and Neck 7.39k/Bridge 8.1k. They’re advertised as 7.8k and 8.3k. I went with the ‘74 Jazz RI’s as they are enamel wire and wanted dcr’s in this range. Early ‘60s Jazz p/u’s were enamel, and then switched to formvar in ’64. Whether the wire makes any difference is another topic. I use Sprague Mylar Orange Drop 225P caps - .033 with the first set and .025 for the second. Fender switched from ceramic to .022 poly film in the late ‘60s. Whether caps make any difference is yet another discussion. I hear a difference between ceramic and poly film, and between .047 and .022. The .022 with the second p/u set (same dcr’s as yours) sound great.
I have never heard one bit of difference between dialectic materials of the same value. Anytime I did hear a difference was due to tolerances changing the value of the cap.
Let's know your thoughts after you played a bit. I've been considering picking up a set . I hear their very good in the flea bass.
I played the Flea bass and while I did t love it, I did find the pickups had an interesting quality so I picked up a set. I am in he middle of an amp build but I am looking forward to drop them in a jazz bass project.
