Fender Roscoe Beck 5 string-missing original preamp.

    I’ve an opportunity to buy one of these basses at a low price-locally too.
    It doesn’t have the original preamp.

    I know these basses are becoming desirable.
    How important is the preamp to this bass?
    I think I’ve heard that these sound best in passive mode anyways.

    Your thoughts?

    I thought the Roscoe Becks were passive, no preamp?

    What preamp? They never had one and were always a passive model. That's why they sounded so good, because Fender preamps don't sound all that good IMO+E.
