IMO the SX bass for 109 bucks is the better deal. The reason why is that I'm not really sure after you get finished with the "Time Machine" or the American Vintage series of basses that you are actually buying a Fender bass.

When a Fender bass is made in Mexico, or a Fender bass is made in Korea, or Japan for that matter, are you really buying a Fender Bass? I think FMIC has spread the name out over so many different price points that they have cheapened the brand name. A 400 dollar made in Mexico Fender or Korean Squier Vs. a Chinese made SX for 109? I'll take 2 of the SX basses - youre not paying 300 buck premium for a Fender decal on the headstock, and the fundementals of bass goodness are there. They have OK fit and finish and good necks and the pickups are fine. The only thing bad about the SX basses is that the pots are substandard. Go to Basspartsresource.com and get the rewire kit for 21 bucks and that is that.

The SX Jbass is every bit as good as the MIM Fenders . I live close enough Rondo that I ws able to go and try all the SX basses. Some had frets thta needed the edges filed but they all sounded as good or better then the Fenders and felt the same . My son picked up a blue J bass with matching headstock , if you don't look at the name on the headstock you would sware you had a fender in your hands. Read the Essex Megathread there is loads of information about these basses.

Fender USA are made by Mexicans working in the US. Fender MIM are made by Mexicans working in Mexico.

Either ways. Both are made by Mexicans. From one of the guitar magazinees that I've read (I forgot which one though.) The pups and pots, etc, for both Fender and Gibson, are supplied by the same company in California, for twenty some years. The same supplier now marketing guitars of their own that are made in China!

I'd say. Go for the Essex. I don't have an Essex bass yet, but it's en route to me via ups. But I do have another Essex guitar. The quality and sound have proven to be excellent, when compares to the original.
