Hi all, I've been looking at the Squier Vintage Modified jazz bass that gets a lot of good comments around here. I haven't tried it yet as I live 2 hours away from a music store - sadly. My only real concern about this bass is the weight of it. I read on bassplayer.com that it weighs about 10lbs. Now, I want to compare the weight of it to a regular fender MIA jazz bass, is it a lot heavier than that, or? Anyone? Thanks!
the VM jazz does have some wieght to it, infact theyre roughly the same weight. and the sound and playability is comparable between the 2 also, but the Squier is around 1,000 bucks cheaper! i know cuz i tried both out in the store when i bought my vintage mod. jazz...
The VM fretless and VM P-bass are agathis, which is pretty lightweight. The VM 70s Jazz is maple, which can get pretty weighty. Having played plenty of MIM Jazz basses and Squier VMs, I don't think the weight is a huge issue. You might feel the difference after a 3 hour gig, but its not that big a difference. I prefer the tone of the VM 70s Jazz over any MIM Jazz I've played, so I wouldn't care if there was a significant weight difference, I would still play the Squier.
For comparison, here are my Jazz Bass weights.... 1997 MIM Jazz Fretless with Badass II - 9.25lbs!!! 1992 Jazz V Plus (MIA 5er) - 9.0lbs Geddy Lee Jazz - 9.0lbs 1997 Jazz V Deluxe (MIA 5er) - 8.5lbs 2006 Squier VM Fretless Jazz - 8.75lbs (heavier than I thought) 1994 MIM Stu Hamm Urge 32" scale - 8.0lbs
Thanks guys, that's just what I was looking for I'm quite surprised that a MIA jazz can be even heavier than the squier VM! Was at the music store today but they're out of stock would have been a nice christmas gift for myself. Anyway, thanks again!
FWIW, the weights listed so far seem lighter than the average of what I've seen. Yes, they can be that light, and I just bought a MIA Jazz Deluxe V that weighs 8.5#, but most of the MIA 5'ers I've seen have been in the general neighborhood of 9.5#.
