I'm looking for a solid Fender with the 70's spacing. I'm aware that the Geddy (but the neck is too small...) and the new 70's bass have the bridge pickup closer to the bridge, but are there anymore basses in Fender's line up like that??
Sorry, have to disagree with you on this. I owned (up until last month) an American Vintage Series 75 RI, and I currently own an older CIJ 75 RI and the pickups are in the 60's position. Measure the pickups pole to pole...4 inches is 70's spacing, 3 1/2 inches is 60's spacing To my knowledge, the Marcus, The Geddy, and the new 2008 MIM 70's bass are the only ones in the Fender line with the true 70's spacing.
The AV'75RI does have the correct spacing. The CIJ and MIJ '75 do not. There have been many threads comparing the two and the incorrect spacing is always one of the biggest complaints about the CIJ/MIJ version. Here is a quick compare I did. The sunburst is a 60s reissue and the natural is the American 75 RI. You can see that the 75 has the wider spacing.
The '75 reissue definitely has '70s jazz bass spacing. Checkout the new 70's jazz. It's $699 I believe. Great instrument.
I agree. I love mine. A fellow TBer has this one for sale for $550. Incredible deal. Get it before it is gone. Here is the link to the classified section. Craig
Having a look at an old photo of my bass, I apologize for sending out wrong info. You are correct as my photo shows... Still for some reason I still feel like this bass never really captured that 70's sounds...hence why I sold it. Oh...for what its worth, my CIJ has a Sadowsky VTC installed by Roger and makes the bass a different animal...it captures that 70's sound and then some...and is the only reason I bought it. By the way..excellent photshopping technique!
Mongo you're dead-spot on with this because I too notice that quite a few CIJ Jazz basses pickups were not in the 70's position
