Fenderish 5ers

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by supernaut, May 2, 2004.

  1. I'm looking around for a fendery style 5 string to be a compliment to my more modern style peavey cirrus. my first contender is the G&L L2500. I'm also thinking about the Lakland Skyline 55-02, Lakland skyling JO 5, and Roscoe Beck 5. any other ones I should have a look at? in that price theme.

You might be able to find a used Lull or a used JO for about the price of a new Skyline...if you would consider going the "used" route. Otherwise, I'd say you probably have some pretty good options to choose from already. ;)
  3. I didn't think about the possibility of finding a used Lull but that would really be something to keep an eye out for.

I dont know about body style wise, but the neck of my Godin SD feels like a Fender, only way nicer. I would check out the Godin SD or Freeway. www.godinguitars.com a new freeway can be had for $400-$500. One of the best deals around IMO.

I say a Moon 5-string, a used one can be had for under $1,000. You could snag one through ishibashi no problem. They have a 5-string right now, with soap-bars though, don't know if that would achieve the shound you're looking for, but it would still sound great at a resonable price. I'll post the pic ishibashi had, i had to make it smaller to fit size limits so it may be a dash grainy.

if you're flexible on the look of the bass, the Pedulla Rapture J2's i've played have sounded like really nice Fender Jazz's for that vintage sound

Anyone check out the new ESP J-bass in a recent Bass Player? Looks good and supposed to be sweet...

Another vote for the KSD here also if you are on a limited budget you could go mex Jazz and modify it as need/wanted. Personally i'm more into 35" scale fivers anymore for the sake of the B. Some will disagree so IMHO, YMMV, SFPE, ETC ;)

My favorite is the Fender Roscoe Beck 5. I also own and recommend the Lull P5, but it isn't quite as Fender-y as the Fender. :)

wwwwait...where can i find a Moon? I've been trying to find one of those forever. I've heard incredible things about them, but there're kinda hard to get stateside.
  15. What about the Fender Marcus Miller 5? I love the look of it, even more than the Roscoe Beck 5... anyone tried it?

I have a horrible, looks-wise, 90s Blade 5-string. The neck is good, quite wide. Strings not too close, almost a P-bas feel to it! But the look of it...ooooh. :spit:

Is it just me or does every Fender copy 5 string look more like a Fender than an actual Fender 5???

Hey, do you have a pic of that Blade? I used to have a white 4 string Blade and I thought is was cool looking - it did have the "Fender" headstock though.

Ishibashi, Japanese music store, http://www.ishibashi-music.com/ go there then click on used, search for Moon odds are you'll find some, for good prices. Them you e-mail the company and work out the shipping arrangements. It will take a few days because of the time difference(I got my e-mails 5am), but they are friendly people and the packaging in excellent. Being able to play one however would be more difficult, but I doubt you would dissapointed with the way they sound, I wasn't dissapointed with my bass, which was a Killer Beelze(man i gotta post pics of that)

The new Schecter California Customs look nice..

    21 frets
    35" scale
    Alder body with maple cap
    Hipshot bridge
    Grover tuners
EMG 40s (there's your modern tone)
    Active pre

Lots of pro features for not a lot of cash.

$949 list which mean they can be had for about $650 or so...

I might pick one up for the hell of it.
