I got a SA BEF (non-pro) off of the classifieds. I had been using a Sub-Wah in Env. mode for those sort of tones, and I really liked it in general, but wanted just a couple more options. Having played the SA filter - I discovered its a tad "clinical" or "clean" for my tastes. I guess I want a raunchier (maybe more analogy? dirty? not sure how to describe it) sort of filter. Any recommendations? I like the vocal qualities of the Wah's filter, and how it's not really super clean, but just want some more tweak-ability I guess.

I don't own one yet, but based on the sound files and videos I've seen online, my next purchase will be an Iron Ether Xerograph Deluxe. The Proton sounds pretty great too.

The word you're looking for is 'wet'. It seems a lot of people had the same issue with the BEF that you're having so SA added the wet/dry/wet+lows control on the BEF Pro. It works well for me.

The term that I've heard used is "resonant."

I like the resonance of my AF -9.

The "squelch" of a filter is largely a product of the resonance - the boost at the cutoff frequency before the filter kicks in. Resonance on the BEF Pro is adjustable on the BEF Pro backpage as "Q", making it potentially very squelchy/dirty/whatever.

Thanks for the info. Still not sure what sort of filter I'll be getting, but at least I know how to look for features on it.

I chose my Maxon because it was purported to be based on the Mu-Tron filters that were popular in the days of classic funk. They were pretty high on the resonance scale back then.

    That too, I suppose.

I A/Bed my AF9 to a buddy's MuIII...they sound different. Not saying that the AF9 is not any good, because it is, but doesn't really sound like a MuIII.

I think you may want to hook up an expression pedal to it thru the hot hand jack. I think you're looking for more of a wah pedal effect.

I don't think it's quite a wah, just a dirtier version of the BEF. I like the vocal quality of my Wah at present, but something more tweakable would be nice.

Edited to add: I love how the filter on my Grey Stache Plus sounds as well. That would be a cool thing to tweak too.

I've owned both, and I agree with this statement 100%.

I have nothing but good things to say about the Xerograph Deluxe and the Proton. Proton is very warm and natural and funky, the Xero is more modern, very flexible and powerful.

I've looked at the Proton. Looks tasty as well. Too many choices!
