Is fingerboard cleaning something you need to do to keep the fingerboard wood in good shape or does it just make the fingerboard look better?

You're supposed to do it to remove the body oils and other gunk from your hands. Murphy's Oil Soap to clean it up, then #0000 steel wool to smooth it out and polish the frets (a little).
