First Build: Custom V Bass

  1. I'm starting a new project, a custom V bass. Here's a rather cheesy diagram of the body as it was, some changes will be made:

My original sketch was headless, but yeah, right...not happening.

Anyhow, it will have a five piece body. Three large Ash sections, and 2 Purpleheart strips. Electronics are still in the works. I had planned on one Peavey T-40 pickup with one vol/tone, and coil tap, one P-style with vol/tone, or one J-style, even. I've been toying around with other ideas and am also thinking about a P/J setup with 2 concentric pots for vol/tone as well. Went to the wood store today to by some Ash. Bought a 2-inch thick (roughly) by 6 foot high board. Has some damage, but not an issue. They didn't have any Purpleheart in the right size, and it's too expensive for me to buy a big slab. So we'll go to the other woodstore, they have a board of it for $16.

I'm undecided on the neck. I may go premade, or I'll design a headstock, glue up a blank, and have my Dad CNC it, just so it's not messed up on this first try.

    I a so terrifically afraid. :D

  3. I actually did laugh a bit at that. :D
    I'm pretty terrified myself. :bag:

  4. I'd be interested to see the CNC-made neck if you do decide to take that route!

  5. Right now it is looking like a good possibility, I like the idea of having a neck to match. I would also like to veneer the headstock with something dark, such as Cocobolo.

I'm guessing I'd use a maple/purplreheart laminate to go with the body.

I don't know, I'm going to play with some headstock designs as well, maybe I'll pull it off.

  6. I've decided on making a neck. It will be maple with 2 purpleheart strips, to match the body.

I'll get some headstock designs up, and some input would be nice for picking/editing them.

  7. Well, today we got the wood planed, and template cut. The neck donor is now my moridira Hurricane as opposed to my Fender.

  8. Dude, your camera's been caught in a time warp. :D

  9. I'm too lazy to be bothered re-setting it every battery change.

Well, today, got the purpleheart plank. That's all that's new.

The waste from the upper wing will easily make the lower wing.

  12. This is true...hmm.

I don't know, it would leave me with an extra block just in case...
