Not too long ago I asked my fellow TBers for some advice on a new amp. I had been playing with a MarkBass SA450 for around a year and a half, but I wanted something with a little more warmth and grit. At the suggestion of the TB crowed, and after reading review after review that raved about these things, I ordered a Genz Benz Shuttle 6.0 and sold the SA450 in the process.

Around a week and a half later (last night), my Shuttle arrives and of course I was more than a little excited. For one thing, this thing is frickin' tiny! It's like the size of a Wal-Mart DVD player - fits right in my backpack where my laptop would normally go. Amazing, anyway.

So I get it to our jam space, get my 2 cabinets stacked up (Mesa Powerhouse 115 and a Yorkville XC210), then go to plug them into the Shuttle and... wha? No 1/4" outputs? ONLY Speak-On? My cabinets don't have Speak-On .. CRAP!! I didn't even bothered to ask.. never encountered an amp without 1/4" outs before.. the MarkBass had combo outputs with the 1/4" inside the Speak-On connector, so I just assumed the Shuttle was the same. I called Long & McQuade and it turns out they CAN get a 1/4" to Speak-On cable (only $22 apiece, gah!) but they have to special order..

I was able to go direct into our P.A. .. but man.. what a let down. That whole jam was crappy for a number of reasons I won't get into.

I have been pondering whether I should just trade in my existing cabinets and maybe get a single 4ohm or something. Any suggestions?

This may sound silly, but you could get speaker cables with speakons on them.

This is one of the things I really don't understand on the Shuttle. What possible reason would putting a Speakon only on a bass head make sense? Surely, at $700 a pop street, it can't be a cost savings issue. I'd say maybe it's a Europe thing, they require them or something, but the GK and MB heads have them. I don't get it. I really, really wish they would put combo jacks in, and, and, and, rotate them up and down instead of on their sides. While they are at it, can the turn the Power cord jack right side up instead of upside down?

I found online a speakon > 1/4" jack for around 8 or 9 bucks. I grabbed two and threw them in my "extras" bag. You never know.

Hey GB! Put a red sticker on the top near the back saying you need ONLY speakons! The kind that peel off easy. I bet it would be nice for new customers like us.

As long as your two cabinets are 8 ohms each, no good reason to get a new single one.
But, I must confess, I bought a NeoX-212T cabinet because the lure of one single cab and one single cable was calling. I got my whole setup down to one cab, one 3 space rack bag, and one double-guitar bag. 3 items. All strapped to a Rock N Roller mini cart. It's very cool to have one trip in and out, and a 7 minute setup time!

Save up for some nice Speakon to 1/4" cables, and you'll be set.

Agrred with Jimmy...also you can get a speakon to 1/4 converter (I always keep 1 in my Shuttle bag in case a cable goes down). It is the beest way to connect high powered stuff together. I also believe it will be the standard by 2010 in US and abroad. Don't feel stupid. Genz is just ahead of the game

Some speakon sockets actually have 1/4" phone jacks in the centre. Whether the Shuttle is so equipped I don't know. I suggest you RTFM (Read The F****** Manual) It should tell you in there. If your cabinets don't have speakons you could always add one, it's very simple.

If you re-read HIS original post, he knows about that. He is specifically saying they do not have center 1/4" jacks, that is the whole problem. He expected them to be there and didn't bring an adapter. I have to say, I expected it too. I had just bought my GK MB2-500 a week earlier, and just assumed everyone used the combo jacks. These two heads were my first experience with Speakons, all my other heads and cabinets have always had 1/4".

I wouldn't have read the manual and didn't. Some things you just expect. Luckily, it wasn't a gig he took the head to, planning on trying it out. I did that, got it in the mail the afternoon before a gig and set it up on stage, and went to plug my 1/4" in, and OOPS. Luckily, I knew to bring my old amp with me right on stage behind my cabinet, and simply swapped it out. It only takes once to learn a valuable lesson!

Haha.. yeah well I sold my old amp before the Shuttle even got here, so that wasn't really an option. I've got a couple of the 1/4" to Speak-On cables on order.. but $22 apiece is a little steep. Totally blind-sided me, but oh well. The lure of one cabinet does have its appeal, definitely, though the flexibility of 2 smaller cabs is also nice. I think I'm just looking for an excuse to replace the Yorkville...

Get a 1/4 to Speakon adapter. I got one for a few bucks on Ebay.

That said, I think Genz leans heavily in the direction of speakon only, for safety and power handling reasons or some junk. I believe the GBE1200 is speakon only as well.

You could also change your cabs out to use speakon jacks. This is very cheap and fairly easy too. Could get a local amp tech to do it for probably 20-30 bucks.

If cost is an issue, then purchase just the speakon connector and not the whole cable. For about $7.00 you can get the speakon connector. Remove one of the 1/4 jacks from your existing cable, restrip the wires and attach the speakon connector you only need a small phillips screw driver and wire strippers, no soldering. If your not sure of the speakon on pin out, +1 is the postive -1 is the negative. It's super easy. If you have a local music store they might have them (GC & SA for sure do).

Why in the world would you buy a new head and not even take the time to find out what kind of speaker jacks it uses before your gig? I'm the king of using new stuff on a gig and even I would do that much.

Go to GC, buy some 2 pole Speakon connectors and make them up yourself. It will only take a few moments and all you will need is a small phillips screwdriver, wire strippers (knife will do nicely) and wire cutters if you don't want to de-solder the 1/4'' plug. You can even find the wiring diagram on the Speakon website.

Oops, I didn't see the thread above with the same info.

because it is becoming the law in most countries.......simple. And, because they're better/safer. We don't believe that 1/4 inchers have any place on pro bass amps. Other do......we don't.

could the OP also rewire the back panels on his cabs? New dishes and speakon jacks would be about the same as the 1/4" to speakon cable, of course until you factor in the insane cost of speakon cable... never mind. i changed my mind.

I can totally understand the mentality.. I think perhaps it might behoove GB to maybe include adapters or something, though, as there are still a lot of cabs out there with no Speak-On capability (like mine). Heck, my Mesa Powerhouse isn't that old and it's 1/4" only. I'll have to look into getting adapters instead of new cables, though, thanks for the recommendation!

    And there you have it.

I never understood why we couldn't just keep banana plugs and screw-type poles.

In a pinch? Strip down your lamp!

You don't have to necessarily get adapters to put on cables - you can buy Speakon to 1/4" cables.

make sense, but many of us haven't bought a new amp in awhile, and would love to have known the situation at the store or something so we could buy adapters and new cables. One of those things that drives us consumers goofy sometimes. Apple does this all the time with things. Switch from one standard to another, and we are left scrambling for adapters and fixes.

    We'll survive.
