First world spoiled bedroom player problem

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by ashtray, Feb 11, 2019.

  1. I don’t gig any more. I have a rig I am VERY happy with - which for all us tone seekers, is just great to eventually find your sound! Playing an Aguilar AG500 through an Aguilar DB212. Zero complaints. Ok, one complaint: I’m in a bedroom and the speakers are aimed at my knees.

Would love to get another matching DB cabinet, but man are they expensive!! I want something matching in looks. Visually it has to look right. I even tried to get an empty DB cab just to raise the 212 up towards my ears, but that fell through.

I could put the cab on something. I could put it on my 4x10 cab - but that’s a different brand and has a metal grill and a completely different look. Nope!

So here I suffer - playing to my knee caps. My ears just waiting for the sound to bounce off enough surfaces to make it up to my face area.

The thing is, I know that cab would sound different lifted up 2 feet!

Oh, and while the “easy” solution is just to buy another DB cab, I’m flat broke, and those cabs are the opposite of cheap! Even used at half price is a bunch of coin!

Maybe I can learn to play sitting on the floor? ;)

Attach some hearing aid type devices to your knees with long enough wires to reach your ears. That way you can hear what your knees hear.

Maybe some sort of speaker stand that lets you tilt the cab back so you can point it towards you.

Use a rolled-up bathroom towel as a wedge and tilt that sucker back.
  9. I stand about 4’ in front of the amp (it’s a bedroom!), or closer. Worse yet, there’s a coffee table positioned 12” in front of the amp - so the sound has to go under the coffee table, and... well, this is NOT how to set up a home rig!

If I built a stand for it, I’d want it to match the cabinet - so tolex and grill cloth. Plus no carpenter skills, so...

As tongue-in-cheek as this post is, I really do need to find a better sonic solution that also doesn’t trigger my OCD visually.

I had a GS212 cab as well, but the two cabs look nothing alike! Stacking those was NOT an aesthetic option. ;)

I have a Fender guitar cab that is similar - same tolex and grill cloth - but smaller dimensions, so that would look bad having the larger cab stacked on a cab 1” more narrow and 6” less deep!

  11. Put the amp on the coffee table. Put the coffee on the floor.
  12. Coffee table has a glass top. :nailbiting:

    Problem solved. Nanoo-nanoo.
  14. That's exactly what they'd do in a developing country & I do as well sometimes.
That's when the recessed output jack on my bass comes in handy!

Put it on the bed. Lay down in the bed with your bass and play.

^^^ One of these..... $30 - $50 at Guitar Center. Maybe less on ebay?

  19. I have a couple of those somewhere in the garage. Used them in the past for guitar amps. I wonder if they’re deep enough for a bass cab? I’ll have to see. Too much weight forward and the stand tips.
