Flatwounds Kill Volume?

Discussion in 'Strings [BG]' started by Marcap, Aug 18, 2002.

  1. I just put my first set of flatwounds on my bass (fender stainless steel, i bought cheap ones just to see how i liked them). I had the bass setup for them. They sound pretty good, and i love the feel of them. However it seems that the overall volume of my bass has gone down. Im using the same amp and settings but its definitley softer. Is this normal for flatwounds vs. roundwounds or is it the fender strings or do i have another problem?

    Thanks for the help!

Flatwounds can tend to sound deeper with more muted highs and so may not cut through as much as you're used to... Boost a bit in the mids to add cut, although sometimes the whole point is to just dig the 'deeper' vibe...

    YMMV
