My stupid head is in this picture from '85 in Atlanta. Opened for Dead Kennedys that night and after they played Peligro (who played drums for the Peppers briefly in 1988) and East Bay Ray rode in my Pontiac Bonneville from Metroplex to 688 to see the Peppers. This is Freaky Styley tour, pretty early after the record. Um, RIP, ya know. The tour in '86 I saw them again wearing just 1 sock.

Fair. I'm not so good at identifying basses except when they have 3:1 keys. Back then they were pretty cool guys. Just kinda nuts, like you would assume. Big fan. They opened for Faith No More once and the place cleared out after they played. I get it.

It's a photo that appeared in an industry magazine for music stores called "Music & Sound Retailer" from '91 or '92 when they did an article on the store I managed from '86-'93 (The Bass Centre in Los Angeles.)

We were one of the only Wal dealers in America at the time (or THE only,) and they happened to take some photos of the store not long after the blue Wal arrived. Flea used to visit the store on occasion, and just happened to be looking for a new bass with a different sound to record with for their next record. I put the Wal in his hands and explained that this was the brand that Geddy Lee used to record Power Windows, and was used by Jason Newsted of Metallica (Jason bought his bass from us as well) and many others. Wals have a very unique tone with their parametric EQ and have an excellent reputation as a bass that records well. He dug it, and immediately contacted his management company to purchase.

A few weeks later he came in looking for a 5-string. He purchased a black MusicMan StingRay-5 with a rosewood fingerboard which he used on the album as well.

I'd completely forgotten that he ever used Trace Elliot rigs (I always associate him with GK, and Mesa), but his tone is really great on that live clip of "Subway to Venus".
