Flying on United this summer

So I am trying to get myself and a bass up to Mont Orford to study with Joel Quarrington this summer and the best flight I can find is on United. Anchorage to Chicago, Chicago to Montreal. United's fragile item info page says that if you have a case over 115" overall then you need to contact United reservations. After talking with a United employee I was told clearly that a larger case is fine and that the oversized baggage fee will just be $100 each way.

It sounds too good to be true.

Anyone have experience flying on United?

 

Gotta love that. Come to think of it I had heard about this at some point in the last few years. Do you think the baggage handlers have gone through some sensitivity training after this debacle?
