foil to jazz bass that's not a P?

  1. I'm getting to be in the market for another bass. Not because my MIM Hotrodded Jazz has failed me, but because I feel like I'm just not getting all the sounds I would like out of it.

    But here's the catch: I haven't found a (fretted) P-Bass that I've really, really liked the sounds of ever.

    The bass I've been eyeing is a Lakland 55-01, but I'm starting to think that would just be a replacement more than an addition. What do you guys have to say/suggest?

    Well don't necessarily give up on P's, there are a lot of them out there and among the older ones no two sound exactly alike.

    What sound are you going for other than "not jazz bass"?
