Footswitch....For a Footswitch??

Little dilemma...

My pedal setup is as follows:
Instrument into Donner Tuner pedal,
Into an MXR M80 DI+ Preamp,
Into a Boss LMB-3 Limiter/Enhancer, to the amp.

I'd like to keep everything together in a homemade setup on top of the cab, but I still need to control the distortion portion of the DI.

My question is, can I wire an on/off footswitch into the MXR to control JUST the distortion, without turning on/off the preamp as well?

I know someone has to have done something like this. Just a single button control switch with a long cable. Nice and neat.
