I recently adquire a Fender mexico P Bass and i wonder which pickup could be the best replacement of choice to retain the classic pbass tone, but improved ,seymour, emg, dimarzio...active or passive, i have Jazz Basses but this is another animal, hence the question

Arcane Experience 65 or Lollar P bass pickup for a 60's classic tone.

  6. An SPB-1 or the Steve Harris signature SPB-4. The SPB-4 is a bit hotter and more aggressive sounding, but still sounds a lot more vintage than some others I've heard.

Alternatively, from EMG, the GZR P pickup, similar to the SPB-4.

Fender Pure Vintage 63 is a great pickup as well and it's not very expensive either.

Fender Custom shop 60s are great. I have a set in my American Standard. I recently dropped some Fralins in my P Deluxe and wow they sound great. Put on some good headphones and jump on YouTube. Piles and piles of demos.

I was super happy with the stock pickup on my 2002 MIM.

I have Duncan’s (quarter pounder) and Dimarzio’s (dp122) in other basses, they can be hotter but not necessarily better.

has no one said Geezer yet?

I bought a p bass from fellow TB member @XRYDER and he'd installed a Schuyler Dean custom pickup in there. Sounds like a dream.

    fralin, lollar

i like dimarzio, duncan, etc but the fralins and lollars really have vintage mojo.

  15. No incorrect answer. No correct answer. All choices are valid. I’ve decided a while back that a Precision pickup is not that complicated and most sound pretty decent. What ever sounds good to you. Possibly including the stock pickup as noted.

For my recent p bass parts project i chose Seymour Duncans Antiquity 2. Great sounding pups IMO. Just choose a pickup that delivers the sound you're after and you'll be fine. Here's a yt-comparison for example:

  18. I’ve got a few pBasses, all with different brands of pickups. The one with the Fralin is the most old-school and my favourite. My MIM 50’s P has an SD Antiquity II - a pickup I got cheap and has nice retro thump. The one pbass I have with the SD QP is the most aggressive sounding, great for a 70s punk sound. Depends on what sounds you want and what your budget is.
