Hey Bassmanguy4516, I'm not sure why you chose me to ask your question of but when I tried to respond MSN bounced the message with "user unknown". So in case you check back here (you had 0 messages posted in your profile) here's the info. PS: You are probably better off just posting your questions here than emailing people - you'll get a broader range of answers. For the "how" go to this link: http://www.bassplayer.com/gear/install.shtml It's a bass player article with pictures that show exactly how to change strings. I can't claim any great insight on what kind to buy. The type (short, medium, regular, extra long) relates to the length of the string and the scale length of the bass they should go on. "Standard" scale is 34" and that's pretty much all Fender Precision and Jazz basses. In fact I think most basses are 34" scale. I think short scale is 30", medium is 32" and extra long is 35&36" (usually upscale 5 and 6 strings). The scale length is the "speaking length" of the string - the distance from the nut to the bridge. I've tried a number of different brands and couldn't tell a big diff between them. I like nickel better than steel but you may have a different preference. I've tried half-rounds but not flats and for the present am sticking with nickel round wounds. http://www.webstrings.com has cheap, decent strings. The last few sets I got I bought from Musician's Friend's clearance. Good luck -------------- the original questions this answer was to ------- This is the message: I'm new to whole bass guitar thing.
