I know I just did that thread last week about Cal. claro walnut burl. But Dave Pushic just sent me pics of the cocobolo top and some of you cocobolo freaks, like RAM, wanted to see where the top is at.

Well, Dave made my top worth every penny of the exhitibition grade board of cocobolo I purchased for it. Here goes, after he did lots of sanding, repeated wipe downs with acetone to leach out the natural oils, and added a coat of urethane with UV protectant -

NO, you're not on acid - that is how the figuring actually looks -

Here's where it started, $140 ago,

That is absolutely gorgeous! I especially like the light contrasts on the upper horn and diagonally opposed near the tone controls.

The horn configurations make the bass look like a body builder posing. Cool.

    Peace,

Thank ya, you all. Insipid as it may sound, sometimes I think the instrument's beauty challenges the musician to produce something beautiful, too.

I won't be playing any AC/DC root notes on this thing. I plan on hurting some of the local competition with it. ;)

  7. Wow!

Beautiful coco, Rick. All that research and hunting you did paid off. How thick is the top piece?

I appreciate positive comments from one of the "Larry Flynt's" of "Talkbass porn"!....(what with all of your gorgeous basses!).

The top was spec'd to be between 5/8" - 3/4" thickness. Obviously, the coco is there for more than cosmetic reasons.

  11. Thanks! But, unlike Larry's harem, the beauty of my crew goes all the way to the core! Pure elegance, baby! :D

Are you going for pickup covers on that bass? Wooden knobs? If so, will they also be coco or a contrasting color?

I agree with malthumb....the contrast from the upper horn and tone controls looks awesome. Thats one beautiful bass you have being built.
