How close from the 'deck' - the space in between the pole pieces to the bottom of the strings tdo you run ?

I'm doing the DS treatment to a hollow dody Samick Royale - better than you'd guess - it's one of the Greg Bennett basses - and I need to build a surround for the pickup.

It's an arch top so this is bound to be a little painful ...
