For those of us without squillions to spend on rigs (Laney Amps - Opinions?)

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Maurice ElDarko, Oct 3, 2001.

  1. Well I'm sure I'm not the first to be in this position: very limited cashflow.

Well my local shop sells Laney amps, and I'm on good terms with him so I'll get it pretty good price. I'm thinking a 120 watter with a 15inch speaker and 6 band grarphic mids and compressor for about a grand (that's $500 in America (damn Aussie dollar))

Anyone had any experience with these amps?
    Thanks guys

Sorry I can't help you, but if you had titled your thread something like, "Laney Amps - Opinions?" then if anyone does have experience, they might be more inclined to read the thread. That's my suggestion. On the other hand, maybe nobody reading this forum has experience with them...

I've played a Laney BC120 (dunno if it's being made anymore), with 6 band graphic EQ, built-in compressor and 15 inch speaker. Numerous times, at that (it was the bass amp at music classes in high school).

It was one of the crappiest pieces of equipment I've ever laid my hands on. Sound was boxy and dull, and the compressor part was just so totally wrong, and pretty much useless. Every time the compressor kicked in, the volume dropped and it gave a harsh clicking sound in the attack. And no matter how much you EQ'd it, it would still sound like crap. I've played some seriously crappy gear in my days, but this is the one piece I hate the most - I think mainly because I had to live with it for three years. :(

But don't let me discourage you - play it for yourself and see. I'm such a sucker for high-end amps nowadays, that I have a hard time appreciating less expensive gear. I actually hauled my EBS combo to class once and man, it was like night and day! ;)

Yeah, any thread with the word "squillions" is asking for all the smart asses to come out. Thats what attracted me, but not with a serious response.

I've spent quite a bit of money (almost a squillion) on my mesa boogie rig (400+ head, 2x15 cab, 6x10 cab, BBE, Compressor, Wireless, etc.). Ha ha SUCKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...check out the marillion.com web site, the bass player used a Laney on the new album and there are some mp3's on those songs.

Hope that helped (a little, at least.)
