Allright! I have a couple questions too, but id like to hear what all you tube headers use for amps! Im going to add the ampeg bxt 410HL to my ampeg BXT 115 HL4. I would love to get a tube amp to run this guys with. Question 1: Are there a lot of tube amps out there that can handle a 2 ohm load? Or are any of them bi-ampable so I could run 4 ohms into one cab, and 4 ohms into the other? Question 2: If I have a 300 watt tube head, will it give both cabs (15 and 410) enough power and grit? It would max only be about 150 watts into each cab. Question 3: What is out there!? What do you guys use and like? I would like to see what you guys use, and your imput! so have at it! What tube amps do you use? and what do you pair them up with? ( this is strictly tube amplifiers, not amps that have a pre-amp with 1 12ax7 tube in them)
1. Almost all tube amps can handle 2 ohms. And no, you won't find biamp gimmicks on them. GK can do it because SS amps are small in comparison. If you want to biamp with tube amps, you will need to buy two. 2. 150 + 150 = 300, so yeah, it will, unless you're such an insane volume freak that you need to fry everyone's brains within a 3 block radius. 3. There's about 20 different ones out there, but the SVT still reigns supreme as king. Peavey is supposed to have a very good 225 watter. Markbass is coming out with a 300 watter.
hmmm Markbass tube amp eh? Wouldn't that be funny if they made a bunch of mini-tubes and packed it into those small lil heads! I would be interested to see how Markbass does with the tube amp though. Its a good thing to know that a lot of them can handle 2 ohms
Ya, I'm looking forward to winding out the Markbass. It only weighs 49 lbs. But the price tag is quite high, so the likelihood of me getting one is small. I tried the Markbass 810 it comes with, though. It sounds pretty good, though I think I still prefer the Ampeg.
yea the 8x10 talk about big. the ampeg bxt 410 i want to buy is about 123 lbs and the 15 is 95. maybe it just makes sense to wheel around an 810! but, I like the 15. its a nice thing. and willem, im sorry, I realize that there are probaly threads from the past about TUBE amps. if people dont want to talk about their tube amps in here than they dont have to. but I had a few questions and wanted to see what other people use and what they run with them. the new 2008 thread!
I'm sorry I just made a bad exam and have to do it again... I'm using a trace elliot hexavalve. Lot's of power, clean, can do 2ohms... But I can't work with the graphic twelve band and I want more dirt so I'm probably gonna buy a weber amps mywatt200 (hiwatt DR201 clone), which can't do 2 ohms, but I have enough with a 4 ohm 810.
Been gassing for a tubeamp myself. Can anyone share some light on - The differences between svt-cl and svt2-pro soundwise - How do they compare to the Mesa 400+ - And the Hi-Watt Bass 400? Thanks
I've got a 400+ and an old SVT. The Mesa can be cleaner, since it has a preamp and master volume, and maybe tonally more diverse. The Ampeg Thunders! The louder it gets the better it sounds. The both have good tone, just different. The SVT gets much louder, can't say about the other amps. I like both of these.
I use a Traynor yba200-2 with and ampeg svt115h and svt410he. It has produces the sound that's in my head
I have used ampeg svts for 22 years and the svt2 pro for 14 years.Really for tube goodiness they are hard to beat.
The Ampeg V4 and SVT both do 2 ohm and sound awesome. Look into the SVT if you need lots of loud bass, head room, and massive volume. Try the V4 if you want some dirt in your sound.
I currently run a SVT-II into a Ampeg BSE-410HLF, now if i were to keep that heavy monstrosity i would get a Berg 610 but im trading it for a Ashdown ABM500EVOIIRC since the SVTII has been through hell and back cosmetically (it looks like someone dropped it multiple times) yet it is the best sounding head ive ever used.
To add to the list, you should look into: Divided by 13 Reinhardt Reeves And you also might want to get in touch with Paul Ruby or Doug Roccaforte. They both do amazing work. If you can rope them into a bass head you would be blessed. Good Luck
The july 08 Bass Player mag, has a whole section on how bass tube amps work, and an " all tube bass head buyers guide" which has all the usual heads you'd guess( svt vr, svt cl, hiwatt customs, peavey, traynor, orange, fender...). Personaly I'm kinda gassing for that new peavey, or a fender bassman 300. On that note i'd love to pick up the sunn 300t but havent been seeing many of them for sale used lately. I play a traynor yba200 (6550's) through a ampeg svt 410he at home and a 73 traynor yba-3 cs through the traynor tc 810 at band. I'm inlove with the tube sound
