So I'm doing a move for a customer (I work for a moving company) today and during the course of the morning I notice this box in the basement. I remark to myself, "That looks pretty cool" as it really is a cool looking piece of tube ephemera. Immediately after that, the customer tells me I can take it if I want. He explained that his dad was an electronics (TVs, radios, etc) repair guy all his working life and that he (the customer) has no use for it. I graciously accepted and worked the rest of the move, waiting to check out the contents when I got home instead of rifling through it in front of the customer. So I get home and open the box and am greeted to this sight: Packed full of NOS tubes, I started picking out the #s that I recognize, 35 in total out of the roughly 140 tubes that sat snugly in their individual squares. I'll be Googling the other #s to see if they're appropriate for home/pro audio use. So here's the 35 tubes: Now I'm starting to dig this. Out of these, ten are Sylvania 12AX7As, nine Sylvania 12AT7s, one Realistic (Conrac) 12AT7 and when I opened one of the white boxes labeled, "12AX7/ECC83 SELECTED" it turns out to be: A Telefunken (even with the crappy pic it should be discernable). FOURTEEN of them in total. The Red RCA box contains a used Tele 12AX7 as well. Never in a million years did I think I'd pull a haul like that but there it is. I can't wait to test the used Tele (and a NOS as well) and Sylvania 12AX7s in my VB-2 tomorrow (the head's at my rehearsal space). Giddy with delight pretty much sums me up right now
Indeed. I can't wait. I've never had the pleasure of slamming a Telefunken in either of two tube heads I've owned. Looking forward to it.
Off the top of my head the tubes I can think of that are used for amps aside from the 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AU7 and 12AY7's, look for 7025 (military spec 12AX7) 6AQ5, 6BQ5, 6V6, 6V6GT, 6V6GTA, 6L6, can't think of more off the top of my head, but there is probably some rectifier tubes in there as well. I got my supply of tubes by pulling them from old organs. Back in the 50's and 60's lots of families bought nice organs and many of them set unplayed for years. I scored a great set of 1961 RCA gray plates, enough to keep my little fender in sweet tubes for a long, long time.
You got that right. The majority of the tubes will help with some neat bass related future purchases and a few will definitely stay in my possession. I had a dream last week of scoring a V4B on a move but this will definitely suffice in the meantime
Very Nice! It's a swell feeling for sure. Thanks much for the info. My limited knowledge of tubes is limited even more so to the common pre/power tubes associated with bass amps and that's it. I'm really looking forward to the educational aspect of this as well.
7591 is another one used for audio. Old Gibson/Kalamazoo amps will sometimes use these. They're similar to a EL34 (which were used in Marshalls). My Kalamazoo bass 30 also has 6eu7 tubes.
I'll be renewing my supporting membership soon but in the meantime I'm not qualified to sell anything through TB. As soon as I get that going again and if I do run across them perhaps we can do something but I want to make it known that this thread isn't meant to start any kind of selling frenzy. I'm just really happy with a find a discovery that applies to my recently rekindled lust with tube amps and other tube audio gear.
Gleaned these off the forum a few years ago, you might find them useful... http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/faq/joes-tubes.html http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/messages/39285.html Very nice score! =wr=
