I found a great software/ drum machine free to download online:

    http://www.threechords.com/hammerhead/introduction.shtml

The negative of it is that it is very dance music based. It still works fine for practice, but I wouldnt record with it. Its great feature is that it is: A) free b) simple to use

Anyone know of something similar that's more Rock orientated?

    Freeware/shareware preferred.

On that site you'll find not only sequencers and drum machines, but about a jillion other useful programs. It will tell you whether they are freeware/shareware/demo. Lots of good stuff if you're willing to take the time to look!

    great suggestions,

I usually use Cubase with Groove Agent vst (a drum machine that works like a virtual instrument). The sound quality is excellent/professional, you have many (50-60) predefined styles (shuffle, hard rock, pop, grunge.....) and is easy to use. Only problem is the price, probably you konow how to try it by P2P emule?
