I am getting a weird noise whenever I hit my open A string on my Fender jazz. It sounds like a clank, almost like the string is hitting a fret but it isn't a buzz noise. I raised my saddle as far as it will go and it is still producing the noise. I tried turning the truss rod in both directions, made it straight, gave it some relief, gave it more relief and I still get the noise. No other strings do it.

However, when I fret the 1st fret on the A string the noise doesn't happen. Could this be an issue with the nut? a bridge issue? a fret leveling issue?

I bought it used and noticed it when I bought it, I just figured I would work it out. The neck looked good and still does so I don't understand.

Can you take a picture of the A string tuner?

Sounds like you don’t have enough downward angle from the nut to the tuner. Can you show us a picture of tuner?

Yeah, when I get home tonight I will take a picture of the tuner, nut and the string angle the best I can. I will tag you in the reply.

When you get home, press down on the A string just passed the nut (on the tuner side), and play. If the problem goes away than it’s the angle. That’s most likely the issue. If the string isn’t long enough to wind all the way down the post then it’ll need to be replaced.

Same thing happened to one of mine. String somehow rode up the tuner and it sounded like the bridge was loose or something vibrating that shouldn't be. Short term fix was to rewind the offending string.....

That seemed to be the issue, I guess the string was cut to short by accident. I restrung it with new strings and wound them down the pole more than I normally would and it went away. Thanks!
