This may be the wrong place for this, but it is a general question concerning bass guitars.

Why do some manufacturers start with the third fret for a fret marker inlay and others start with the first fret? I was once told by someone that marking the first fret with anything is redundant as it is obviously the first fret...you couldn't possibly lose your place there.

Gretsch comes to mind as almost always having a fret marker inlay on the first fret.

I've always thought having one on the first fret simply looks better.

It's for people who can't count to 1. Mostly guitarists.
