I have a Fender Jazz bass that's about 7 years old. I like it alright,
but lately I've had oportunities to play on some fretless basses and
I really liked them. Now I know that I could just go buy a fretless, but
I don't have a lot of money. I have heard of people taking the frets
off of their basses, hence a fretless bass. Is this actually possible
without damaging the neck? If it is, how would I go about doing it?

Welcome to TB. Try a search (globe thingie - top of the page)
and enter "defret". Some threads have links to step-by-step
    de-frettin' (with pictures :D ) . Also, fretless J necks pop-up
on eBay from time to time. And then there's Warmoth .
