Fretboard Binding?

I love a white bound fretboard. It absolutely skyrockets the bass aesthetically in my opinion.

What I want to know, is what effect do they have? Or are they strictly looks?

Also, post some good looking pics ;)
  2. Purely for looks.

Their only downside is that they make refretting more expensive as the fret ends need to be snipped on the underpart (the vertical tang piece) leaving the crowns to overhang the bindings. The repair person must also be extra careful when filing. Often the binding must be removed entirely before refretting a neck.
