The neck should have a slight curve to it. It shouldn't be completely straight.

well its buzzing open now and the action is high must be 5 mm over the fret, its really annoying me as i want to play but fret buzz annoys me so much it takes all the joy out of it for me.

the bow right now has the whle thing straight with just a bit of a bow on the 1-3rd fret, when i tighten it buzzes at random spots

If you're having trouble setting it up yourself, maybe you should go ahead and pay a pro to do a pro set up. Trust me, it's well worth the money to have your bass playing at it's absolute best.

Press the first and 15th frets, and you should have between a business card and a credit card thickness of clearance from the top of the 8th fret to the bottom of the lowest string on your bass. More gives you high and 'stiff' action, less and you will likely get severe buzz unless your frets are absolutely perfect. In the summertime, when it's hot and humid, the strings 'relax', allowing the truss rod to work better, yielding LESS clearance, because the strings are not pulling the neck so hard. You often have to back off the truss rod in the summertime. Loosen it 1/8 to 1/4 turn, leave it for a day, recheck clearance.

There is, of course, 500,000 webpages dedicated to this, complete with pictures, flash graphics and everything...

yah i think i'll have too

and FYI to everyone, the bass is a very high end bass made in the late 80s, in canada. Brand name Signature. Alder sides and 3 piece maple neckthrough. The brand is now defunct and less then 500 were made.
