Fretless bass for novice ?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Paolo, Feb 15, 2001.

  1. Hi

I want to start play the fretless bass. I've played the fretted bass for 8 years. What's the best and no expensive fretless bass that I can buy for my studies? It's very difficult to try learn the fretless technique ? What'are the principal differences for fretted and frettless bass. Anyone can help me ?

    Thanks

    Paolo

The cheapest fretless basses you can buy NEW are the Yamaha RBX260 and the Fender Standard Jazz (Mexican).

It is not difficult to play fretless if you already have good hand position technique (thumb behind the neck, one finger per fret, etc.). If you like ti play with your thumb over the neck and use only one or two of your left hand fingers, you'll have a much more difficult adjustment.

Biggest difference between the two is the tone. Lack of frets makes the fretless a darker, rounder sounding bass. You may need to tweak your favorite amp settings to get it to cut through a band the way a fretted bass does.
